Hello, [community profile] write_good!

So, it's July. When did that happen? (also, we made it over 100 subscribers while I wasn't looking. Welcome!)

If you're anything like me, maybe you kept thinking, "Oh, I should..." and then, suddenly, it's two months later, and you never did.

Part of the feedback from the poll (...several months ago) was that some of you were waiting for something from a particular genre or fandom to be posted. I started to make a poll to add into this post to help people gauge what they might find an audience for, but I'm certain that I would have left out some enormous fandom or chosen an incomplete or restrictive list of genres. So, if you haven't posted because you didn't want to see your story languishing, crit-less, feel free to leave a comment here testing the waters.

Or, leave a comment about something else entirely. Toss around a story idea, tell us what's on your plate, writing-wise, point out that you're still up discussing something that you posted earlier, whatever.

Title: John the True
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kisahawklin/[personal profile] kate
Fandom: Stargate: Atlantis
Pairing: John/Rodney friendship
Rating: 10+
Word count: 4104
Author's Notes: based on the fairytale Faithful John. Originally I had this idea for the Fairytale challenge at [community profile] sga_flashfic but it didn't quite get done. Then [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan needed a pick-me-up so I dusted it off, basically rewrote the whole thing, and here it is. Problem is - it's still not working quite right. I wrote this in a hurry, and late (until 3am last night), so it might just be that I was exhausted and rushing. I'm wondering if all I really need is to expand things, that it's too rushed. But I don't think so - I feel like I have no ending, like I am missing some way to bring home the message of trust that isn't just patting the characters on the head and saying 'do better next time'. Help!

This post will be folded into the FAQ eventually.

I thought I had set tag management so that members could tag their own work, but I hadn't. That has been fixed now.

Every new post should have at least one of the following tags on it:

* fanfiction
* original fiction
* request
* discussion

Fiction posts should also have the following tags:

* length
o short: under 1000 words (including drabbles, comment fic)
o medium: 1000 - 10,000 words (including short stories, scenes from larger works)
o long: 10,000+ words (novellas, big bang stories)

* pairing
o f/f
o f/m
o m/m
o none
o other

I've added "pairing: other" as a catch-all for my convenience in case someone does not tag their own work. If your work contains a pairing that you don't feel is described by the above list (due to number of characters, gender identity, etc.) you're welcome to add a tag for it, or use "pairing: other"

I would prefer not to use author tags, as this is not a pleasure-reading community, and I'd like to keep the tag list to a manageable length. You're welcome to link to other works posted here or elsewhere if you want to invite people to compare works against each other, place them within a larger universe, etc.

I'd also prefer not to add fandom/character tags to entries. I can see where it would be useful to be able to look at past critiques, but if you really want to delve into a discussion of how to write Character A, I think that's best done within your fandom.

Authors are welcome to add genre tags, but I won't be policing it except to keep an eye on the tag list for misspellings or repetitions.

Questions/concerns/suggestions welcome as always, in comments or by private message to [personal profile] healingmirth

Hello!

Hopefully by now people have had a chance to read the community info in the profile and the proto-FAQ.

I wanted to wait until there were a decent number of people watching the community before asking for suggestions and feedback, instead of fiddling around as people trickled in. We're at 50 members, so here goes!

I'd really appreciate it if you'd take the 20 seconds to click or ticky-box your answers. I'm expecting a high lurk-rate for communities in general, but I would very much like to know if there's something that would entice you to participate that this community doesn't offer yet.

Nearly everything is open to discussion - I will say, though, that I have no intention of offering prompts, challenges, or writing exercises in this community, because I think there are ample opportunities to find that elsewhere. I already know of [community profile] dailyprompt and [community profile] nano_writers. If you know of other active writing/challenge/prompt communities (preferably here on dreamwidth, but elsewhere is okay, too) that are multi-fandom and/or original-fiction friendly, please share.

Questions/concerns/discussions welcomed in comments.

ETA: If you have an opinion on tagging/archiving/memories, feel free to share that too. My current plan is wait-and-see. Dreamwidth plans to revamp the memories system eventually, and unless it becomes unmanageable, I plan to stick with tags and the links sidebar to keep track of things.

ETA2: I want to point out that anonymous comments to this post are allowed and screened if you want to make suggestions more privately, and you are also welcome to send me a private message.

Title: The Common Craving
Original Fic
Characters/Pairings: Celosia / Nikolai & Payne / Hugues
Rating: PG -13
Word Count: 1,742
Notes: This is an original universe I just started so there are probably problems galore. This was originally a couple of drabbles and a longer piece but I've tried to connect it together. Any criticism, suggestions, etc. will be lovely, and please do tell me which parts you found funny and which parts the joke just falls flat.

Title: Home To Stay
fandom or original fic: Fandom: Leverage
Characters/Pairings: Alec/Eliot Pre-Slash
Rating: G

Notes: It's a sequel to To Where You Are but can stand on his own. Not that I would mind if you wanted to check out the prequel ;o)
Title taken from a Josh Groban song.
Disclaimer: If I actually owned Leverage or the characters, I really wouldn't have to write fic about them!
Summary: And then, suddenly, Hardison was there.

Depending on what quantity of traffic and interest we get, I will probably make broad discussion posts from time to time. This is the first of those!

While everyone is welcome (and encouraged!) to post longer stories, let's start small.

Feel free to bring up anything you want in comments

Where do you set your thresholds for exposition or character description if you are just writing a single scene?

In fanfiction in particular, where much of the audience is familiar with the characters and their appearances, authors may tend to omit details (or overuse others) that might leave a general audience confused, but you can certainly write a complete scene of original fiction where the readers come in knowing nothing about the characters.

(in trying to think of an example this piece of original fiction by [livejournal.com profile] misslucyjane was the first thing that came to mind.)

Introduce yourself, if you wish to! This is not at all a questionnaire to be filled out, just some thoughts to get people started.

What do you write? How long have you been writing it? Are you a write-every-day sort of person? Do you go dormant for months at a time and then churn out an epic? Or go dormant for months and churn out a drabble?

Do you have a type of story that you return to again and again to perfect, or do you branch out to new styles and structures every time you pick up a pen or sit down to the keyboard?

Do you like to spend three paragraphs on the sun setting behind the trees? Do your characters have a passion for discussion or banter? Is everything better with a few mysteries to solve?

Is there an author (pro, amateur, original, fanfic, whatever) whose writing you particularly aspire to?

Resources!

What do you depend on when you write? I'm sure we all do our fair share of googleing, but are there websites (or, gasp! books?) that you go back to again and again for the mechanics of putting a story together?

Just to get the ball rolling:

Grammar Girl - Grammar Girl provides short, friendly tips to improve your writing. Covering the grammar rules and word choice guidelines that can confound even the best writers, Grammar Girl makes complex grammar questions simple with memory tricks to help you recall and apply those troublesome grammar rules.

Dictionary.com and Thesaurus.com are my go-to word-checking places, for no reason other than habit - I was subscribed to their Word of the Day list for a long, long time. (Today's word is bumptious.)

[livejournal.com profile] little_details - An already-impressive back-catalog of questions answered, and literally thousands of members willing to contribute their diverse expertise and interests to making your story more accurate. A fantastic resource for when you just can't find the answer you need. (I am willing to admit that I don't write anything nearly as ambitious as the things that most of the people there seem to be researching for. It's fascinating to read, anyway.)
