I had a thought!

Would anyone be interested in some sort of anonymized option for posting stories? I'll admit, this thought was inspired by fannish kink memes, but maybe some of you out there would like to test-run a new genre, or write something in a potentially-irritating style or what have you, in a space that's separated from your current following.

(Of course, you're also perfectly welcome to just make a new account and post the entry under that username, as people have done on the internet since the beginning of the internet.)

I'm interested in suggestions of options for allowing people to keep control over their words. I'd be happy to repost a story here for someone without their name attached (maybe with an agreement to leave it up for a month?) but there's also the option of hosting the story off-site somewhere under the author's control and discussing here. I think that published versions of google docs don't have account names attached to them? I'm sure there are other such options that I'm not aware of.

Or, if there's anything else I (or someone else!) can do to pique interest in posting or discussion: sound off!

This post will be folded into the FAQ eventually.

I thought I had set tag management so that members could tag their own work, but I hadn't. That has been fixed now.

Every new post should have at least one of the following tags on it:

* fanfiction
* original fiction
* request
* discussion

Fiction posts should also have the following tags:

* length
o short: under 1000 words (including drabbles, comment fic)
o medium: 1000 - 10,000 words (including short stories, scenes from larger works)
o long: 10,000+ words (novellas, big bang stories)

* pairing
o f/f
o f/m
o m/m
o none
o other

I've added "pairing: other" as a catch-all for my convenience in case someone does not tag their own work. If your work contains a pairing that you don't feel is described by the above list (due to number of characters, gender identity, etc.) you're welcome to add a tag for it, or use "pairing: other"

I would prefer not to use author tags, as this is not a pleasure-reading community, and I'd like to keep the tag list to a manageable length. You're welcome to link to other works posted here or elsewhere if you want to invite people to compare works against each other, place them within a larger universe, etc.

I'd also prefer not to add fandom/character tags to entries. I can see where it would be useful to be able to look at past critiques, but if you really want to delve into a discussion of how to write Character A, I think that's best done within your fandom.

Authors are welcome to add genre tags, but I won't be policing it except to keep an eye on the tag list for misspellings or repetitions.

Questions/concerns/suggestions welcome as always, in comments or by private message to [personal profile] healingmirth

Hello!

Hopefully by now people have had a chance to read the community info in the profile and the proto-FAQ.

I wanted to wait until there were a decent number of people watching the community before asking for suggestions and feedback, instead of fiddling around as people trickled in. We're at 50 members, so here goes!

I'd really appreciate it if you'd take the 20 seconds to click or ticky-box your answers. I'm expecting a high lurk-rate for communities in general, but I would very much like to know if there's something that would entice you to participate that this community doesn't offer yet.

Nearly everything is open to discussion - I will say, though, that I have no intention of offering prompts, challenges, or writing exercises in this community, because I think there are ample opportunities to find that elsewhere. I already know of [community profile] dailyprompt and [community profile] nano_writers. If you know of other active writing/challenge/prompt communities (preferably here on dreamwidth, but elsewhere is okay, too) that are multi-fandom and/or original-fiction friendly, please share.

Is there something you particularly liked in another writing community that you'd like to see here?

Questions/concerns/discussions welcomed in comments.

ETA: If you have an opinion on tagging/archiving/memories, feel free to share that too. My current plan is wait-and-see. Dreamwidth plans to revamp the memories system eventually, and unless it becomes unmanageable, I plan to stick with tags and the links sidebar to keep track of things.

ETA2: I want to point out that anonymous comments to this post are allowed and screened if you want to make suggestions more privately, and you are also welcome to send me a private message.

General information
  • What is [community profile] write_good?

  • [community profile] write_good is a space for authors on Dreamwidth to post their works of fanfiction or original fiction for discussion.

  • Is this community just for authors?

  • Readers are welcome too! However, we do ask that if you read something here, that you make an effort to leave a constructive comment, even if it's just a sentence or two. Please don't be shy about offering your thoughts as an audience member.

  • Aren't you afraid that you're going to call down the wrath of the ancient writing gods by having a grammatically incorrect community name?

    It's my hope that we'll be able to build a community here to support both newer and older writers, to provide a sounding board and constructive criticism. I read and write because I enjoy it, and I hope we can generate discussions that keep writing and reading fun for all involved. (or at least entertaining in a larger sense if you want to put up some soul-crushing angst for discussion)

  • What do you mean by constructive criticism

    The idea is to build on what the writers are doing well, not just correct what they're having trouble with. If there's something you loved - tell them! Otherwise the good bits may end up on the cutting-room floor.

    Feel free to make suggestions for what you might have done differently, had you been writing the story, but explain your reasons. Even if the writers still prefer their original versions, it may help them evaluate the choices they made.

    Always be aware that we are discussing the work, not the writer as a person. However, this is not a literature class or a book group - the author is part of the conversation, and is probably quite attached to their work and their words.

Posting guidelines
  • What kind of posts can I make?
    • works of original or fanfiction of any length, from any genre or fandom
    • requests for a beta-reader
    • discussion of a particular aspect of writing that you're struggling with or interested in

  • Where should I post?

    Works of fiction submitted for discussion must be posted to the community. You can access-lock the entry if you wish, but it's important to creating a space to work together that we keep discussions here, rather than in the midst of the (wonderful and legitimate!) squee that your works will get when posting for your flist subscribers and in fan communities

  • How should I post?
    Please put a header on all of your fic posts, containing the following, at a minimum:

    Title:
    fandom or original fic genre:
    Characters/Pairings:
    Rating/warnings: - mainly for the purposes of SFW vs NSFW, explicit sex, mature themes, disturbing subject matter, etc.
    Word Count: - approximate to within 1,000 words is fine

    Feel free to include a link to or a brief summary of your characters or setting if you're posting fanfiction, or original fiction from a series or longer story.

    All works should be behind a cut-tag.

    What is a cut? How can I hide part of my entry behind a cut?

    My personal preference is to limit author's notes explaining the story. If there is something in particular that concerned you when writing it, or you especially want feedback regarding a certain thing, like characterization, I encourage you to include that in a note at the end rather than sending a reader into the story with the expectation of plot holes, etc.

  • How often can I post?

    In an effort to build up some steam, there are no restrictions on posting for the near future. However, please make an effort to leave concrit for other authors before posting multiple stories. This community only works if people participate on both sides.

Please feel free to leave any questions, concerns or suggestions as comments on this post.
